Met up with an older Canadian Wildlife Biologist one time a few years
back. We were conducting business and were making small talk completely
unrelated to our business, but the topic of what he did for a living.
He said he was recently up in the Arctic studying Polar Bears, but he
had quit. Making conversation, I queried "Oh yeah, how are the Polar
Bears doing?". He replied "They're just fine".
That got my attention so I inquired further..... "Really? That's not
what I hear in the news or read about all the time".....he said "I know,
that's why I quit."
So I pressed him further.... he said that the other scientists were
manipulating the data they were gathering to say whatever they needed
the data to say....so I asked why they would do that?.....and this I
will remember forever....he said "To put it frankly, there is no grant
money for good news. It's job security."
To say this was an eye opener for me is understating it.
