Well, when they present information as gospel and then backtrack (eg, CDC/masks/covid) sure they are. That's probably the #1 reason Redfield lost his job under Biden. And rightly so.

One has to understand that our population is largely scientifically illiterate, and don't have the tools to separate fact from opinion. However, even though the population is largely scientifically illiterate, it is still pretty-well educated. Business, law, education, you name it. They're smart, great logic set, and articulate, so they figure they can pretty much suss things out. See Peter Navarro. Oops.

But it's not just "everybody else." Science has become such babel, with so many subspecialties, that even scientists discerning the truth across disciplines can be tricky. It's rife for abuse. You need to find a specialist you can trust to use as a sounding board. And how many of us have all of those specialists in their back pockets?

Is science a scam? If you use a cell phone, you know it's not. It's just hard to figure out who to believe, at times. And without the right background, it's nigh on impossible.

Oh, definition. How about: A stepwise, logical approach to problem solving, wherein a given solution can be reliably repeated by others.
