>After six hours, eggs laid in the two cell types were collected and weighed. This study was repeated across 3 colonies; in total, 152 eggs were measured. Eggs laid in queen cells were 13.26% heavier.
The larger question of this study is whether honey bee queen production is the sole result of gene expression via epigenetics or is there some maternal involvement with egg selection as is the case with some other insects. The latter is observable by us beekeepers whereas the former is unapproachable. That alone seems like reason enough for curiosity and a possible opportunity to experiment in some small way.
