Cosmic Rays" are also gamma rays, and they are punching tiny holes through everything all the time. There's nothing we can do about it.
>Actually it was a question that someone asked me at a beekeeping meeting and I had no answer. Thanks for the explanation Jim.
>Some decades back I worked with some nuclear engineers that made a product that was primarily used for testing for heart worms in dogs. The material looked a bit like saran wrap and this was run thru a low energy nuclear reactor. Holes were punched thru the material with gamma radiation. The rolls were 'hot' when fresh out of the reactor and we would store and let 'cool' down for 6 months. The last stage in the process was the material was run thru caustic to etch out the holes. We would finally test the materials hole size and distribution with the use of an electron microscope.
>I was more worried about exposure to the caustic than any potential radiation exposure.
