I have tracked down the story of a local life-long beekeeper having to quit beekeeping because of a serious reaction.

After growing up around his mother's bees and be coming a commercial beekeeper for a decade or two, a local man was stung in the throat will drinking soda. No evidence of bee or yellow-jacket was recovered (swallowed!?), but after having a life-threatening reaction to that sting he could no longer tolerate bee stings and gave up beekeeping.
