Richard,
Yes, I've also noticed colonies that have capped brood and eggs and nothing
else - I realized this was EFB, but only because an adjacent colony was
infected. That hive was treated with OTC and recovers quickly.
When I made nucs this year, I gave them all OTC - they all seem to be
healthy, even the weak ones - I think it's a very cheap and easy insurance
policy especially if the apiary has a history of EFB that season.
OTC in my state isn't challenging to get. I will not elaborate but even if
I can't get a vet to sign the VFD for my bees, I can get a vet to sign a
VFD for chickens or some other animal that requires OTC.
I've stockpiled OTC, I got way more than I'll need and I keep it in a cool
location.
I'm not advocating this at all, but you can legally buy fish antibiotics
without a prescription. This is perfectly legal in all 50 states, but its
for FISH USE ONLY.
