Can't say that there is complete understanding, since an acid has so many
biological effects.  Try hopping into a bathtub full of sulfuric acid to
see (just kidding, DON'T play with strong acids).  Anyway, OA has quick
action when it contacts the mite's foot pads (empodia).

I haven't personally noticed an adverse effect upon brood.

I haven't noticed an adverse effect upon the queen either, even with
repeated doses of 2 g OA.  Obviously, there would be an exposure level when
it would start to harm the bees.
