Partly anecdotal and small sample size, but just to suggest that
positive varroa reproduction and mite population growth rates in
susceptible bee hosts are the primary "driver" of varroa mite levels.
Winter mortality in the same climate, same winter, many conformations
of hives, apiary sizes, beekeeper experience, etc:
25% - in 52 colonies (5 beekeepers) in which we either confirmed low
levels of mites going into winter, or the beekeeper treated during the
previous year with strong miticides, or had resistant queens and kept
mite levels low.
89% - in 28 colonies (7 beekeepers) in which beekeepers did not treat
the previous year, or if they treated it was with soft chemicals and we
confirmed partial or ineffective control.
