Jerry,
At least for hauling hay in the State of Washington during the early 70's, I had to get 4 inch wide straps to be legal when hauling for the family farm. The straps anchored to a heavy hook in front of the bed by the cab and to a winch type ratchet mounted on the back of the bed. Two straps ran lengthwise, one over each side of the load, no cross straps. If memory serves me correctly on the strength of the straps, you could in theory pick the entire load and truck up by these straps. The state did not like hay loads dumped down the the highway. I suspect the pressures we put on the hay load would crush hives.
