In my own operation, I eschew the use of synthetic miticides that may
contaminate the honey or combs, but that is mainly a decision based upon
the marketing claims for my honey and beeswax.
That said, based upon the findings that fluvalinate and coumaphos residues
can be harmful to queens and perhaps worker brood, I've been cautious about
amitraz, and have run field trials, as well as questioned commercial
beekeepers at length about what they observe.
To date, I've not found evidence that "normal" amitraz residues are
associated with colony health or queen problems.
