" More than the money, it
is a complicated question with many variables."

It is more than money. There is a huge placebo effect quite often. All kinds of doctors jump on the band wagon. Things like vitamin E and A for heart health or glucosamine and chondritian for arthritis are both recent examples. Then clinical trials came along and showed the former not only did nothing for heart health but also resulted in increased rates of cancer while the later was shown to be no more effective than placebos. How many of you have seen ads claiming great pain relief from a popular over the counter pain med and then dug out the clinical trials from the lit that said it was no better than sugar pills? In fairness, those trials showed it had a 5% advantage over placebos for head aches. Something like 30% on the drug felt relief while only 25% on the placebo felt relief.
