Back in the day, when I tried to make spring honey, I found that you can pull nucs from good strong colonies without hurting them. Just when they are starting to get going, you can steal 3 or 4 frames of brood and bees, and they scarcely miss it. Can even repeat this procedure 2 or 3 times. It's like giving blood, where the body just ramps up production. In the final analysis you get more out the colonies than you would have if you had not done this.
