I would add that Michelle Taylor and associates, in New Zealand, where there's apparently no AFB to confound the issue, got the same result.

In my own reading of bee history a lot of the 'small cell' logic (and their math) was largely contrived and based on sloppy thinking. It should be stated that (based on very very old data) that the bees in Europe were not all of the same size and there was a significant difference in size when you compared the AMM bees of Northern Europe and the Italian bees of the south.
