Fair points, Bill. I use it for two reasons. First, in the spring, because they use it when there's no forage and stop using it as soon as there's adequate forage--so I get a good gauge and know when to pop those supers on. (Yeah, ok the flowers are a dead giveaway, but still....)
I also have a hummingbird feeder that I use in my home yard that I fill with 1:1 syrup starting in June. Again, the bees don't hit that until there's inadequate forage, so when they start hitting it, it's time to pull the honey supers and feed until the goldenrod flow hits.
