Mitochondrial genomes drive metabolic profiles more than anything else, no? Also, these are distributed solely down the maternal line, so if bees are anything like other systems, there will be far fewer mitochondrial DNA variations than nuclear. I'm all about epigenetics, but I don't know that this gets you there.
