Yes, I agree about the mailing list "programs" (note that this is the
operative word). I am also on a moderated H-list (H-LATAM) and we often can
get into it. However, NAUTARCH is NOT on any software program, but rather a
large list run completely by humans. There is no way to set MAIL or NOMAIL,
etc. The mailing list should be treated as a open discussion group, but I am
afraid that with this sort of set-up, censorship is much more a possibility.
If one's post is censored from the list, how would one know? If a moderator
rejects a post, it is usually sent back to the poster with a note (this has
happened to me when I meant to send a private note and hit the wrong key).
Perhaps the term "mailing list" should not be used for discussion lists such
as NAUTARCH. It is more of a massive distribution list, such as those seen on
email programs (like OfficeVision).
