Thanks for the recommendation, David. But the metallurgical work I’ve done with students has been collaborative. Slags aren’t my expertise, although I can help If you send me some pictures John. I can also help connect you.

Krysta Ryzewski has done some metallurgical analysis, primarily of iron and black smithing waste. My colleague Carl Blair here at MIchigan Tech has expertise in iron smelting and slags. Same for Aaron Kotlensky- iron slags.

I’m don’t know anyone working with copper slags, although I have reference collections in the lab at MTU.

Some stuff here:

The Historic Metallurgy Society has great resources online, including the National
slag Collection:

Absolutely invaluable are their data sheets that you can find in the publications section (scroll to the bottom and click “all data sheets”

I can send more resources when I’m back in the states next week.

Best,
Tim

I've got several samples a chemist has tentatively identified as likely being slags resulting from iron ore processing, copper ore processing, and possibly glassmaking trials. I need to confirm this and confirm that they are not the result of normal blacksmithing or household fires.
