Thank you, Ben.

I recall two personal encounters with Ed Jelks, both in his later years. The first was when planning the plenary for SHA 2011, for which I served as program chair. I asked him to participate the plenary, and he responded with enthusiasm. He was a pleasure to work with as we planned the session, where he did a fascinating talk on the development of historical archaeology from 1950 to the birth of the SHA in 1967 (where he was present). Several years later, as Christopher Matthews and I were writing the Introduction to our SHA Perspectives reader on public archaeology (Public Archaeology in the Society for Historical Archaeology: From Outreach and Education to Critique and Global Justice) he was one of the senior scholars we interviewed about public archaeology during the early days of SHA. Once again, his input, astute and cheerfully shared, was extremely helpful. I am so glad to have known this kind man, and this generous scholar. He will indeed be missed.

For those of you who would like to know more about Ed Jelks' contributions to the history of the discipline and the Society for Historical Archaeology, please see his published oral history entitled "A Conversation with Ed Jelks" in Historical Archaeology, Vol. 35, No. 4 (2001), pp. 8-37. For those of you who can't access past issues of the journal, the oral history was reprinted by the SHA in "A Half Century of the Society for Historical Archaeology," which is available as a free download at lulu.com. For the 50th anniversary meeting of the SHA, held in Fort Worth, Texas in January 2017, Ed submitted a video, in which he recounts the role he played in organizing and chairing the committee that established the society in 1967. At the end of the video, he leads viewers in a stirring rendition of the "Happy Birthday" song, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the SHA's founding. You can watch the video on the SHA's YouTube channel. Ed was truly a pioneer of the SHA. He will be greatly missed.
