Dear Susan Walter, Inspired by this thread, a member of our Campus Archaeology Program experimented with some of the techniques suggested here and wrote a blog post about it - http://campusarch.msu.edu/?p=9772. It may be of some interest. Found that UV light worked very well on glass and iDStretch worked well on ceramics and UV light worked moderately well on ceramics.
