Earlier this year, Michael L. Kunz and Robin O. Mills published a
controversial article in American Antiquity concerning “A Precolumbian
Presence of Venetian Glass Trade Beads in Arctic Alaska.” This immediately
elicited a negative response from the bead research community with Elliot
Blair at the forefront. His rebuttal of the Kunz and Mills article will
soon be published in American Antiquity. In the meantime, Blair has
published a more detailed and expanded version in Issue 78 of The Bead
Forum, the newsletter of the Society of Bead Researchers. In
well-documented detail, Blair points out the problems with the Precolumbian
