Hi,

Tim, Denis, and the other responders have raised some interesting (and important) points. I hope you will forgive this "commercial", but JCAH would welcome a "reflection" piece on the considerations involved in doing community / public archaeology during the pandemic. These pieces are normally short, and written by both people from various communities and professionals, from all over the world. We have also done groupings of reflections on the same overall topic from different people. Of course, if someone wanted to do a longer, more substantive piece, that would be welcome too.

Write me personally if the idea piques your interest. I hope you and your constituent communities stay well.

Carol

Thanks for that thought Denis-

This is provocative. Both projects I’m considering for the summer (or was considering and am now trying to see if I can salvage…) are not collaborative with an indigenous or another at-risk community. In my state, the virus-caused mortality rate is much higher among African Americans so far. It will take a lot of research to tease out the issues here, but structural violence has played a role through less access to health care, less food security and quality, and increased exposure to environmental contaminants.

I could see how concern for potential impacts among collaborative communities and stakeholder groups to be a powerful concern in calling off fieldwork.

My projects might have had public archaeology elements, but not this summer. Attracting crowds to a site simply isn’t possible this summer.

Thanks for your thoughts,

Tim
