I've followed Jim Bach's observations for some time with great interest, as
I also observe some queens just don't attract a retinue as much as do
others. Ditto with set out caged queens that don't attract a crowd. I
personally like to select queens for breeding that exhibit strong retinue
formation.
It never occurred to me that this might be a warm-winter vs cold winter
phenomenon--I'm a Calif beekeeper, but do get snowy winters
