I would ask, to whom exactly does it seem that there are more dumpsters, industrial sites, and pollution than trees in NYC? One may want to take a look at the NYC tree-map which keeps track of almost 700,000 trees in the five boroughs. The trees are cared for by citizens and the city as a cooperative urban forest. Each tree has a maintenance record which includes pruning details, cleanup, species ID, landscaping, and other details- have a look.
If a beekeeper is fortunate enough to have a colony or two in midtown, those bees will have access to a succession of blooms which would include 12,500 American Basswood among ten's of thousands (65, 381 to be exact) of various species of other trees.
