Jamie, benzaldehyde is the odorant in fresh peach leaf buds, oil of
almonds, amaretto liqueur, and almond cookies. I just checked and find
that it is no longer readily available, perhaps because it can be used as a
precursor in the manufacture of an illicit drug. Bummer!
Butyric acid, or its precursor, butyric anhydride are still sold, sometimes
with a masking scent. Butyric acid is the odorant in rancid butter and
aged cheeses--folk with less refined taste may find the odor disagreeable.
