Peter,
No major disagreement with anything you said. My original question on why
not 2x1 instead of 1x1 was because of this very cold spring and that my
mentees packages arrived in the middle of the cold with nothing out there
for the bees to feed on. Hence my question of why not 2x1?
For may of us on the list, packages are not an issue becasue we usually
have some drawn comb along with frames of honey so 1x1 or 2x1 is
incidental. We have already taken care of the problem.
But one of my mentees is brand new with only wax foundation and I want
their comb to get drawn quickly and with the least number of visits to the
hives.
I use plastic, as does another mentee and advised them (who also got
packages) to re-coat the frames with more wax to aid in comb building.
After feeding for comb buildup, if they listen to me they will only feed
when necessary, which is usually in the fall if we have a warm late fall
and the bees keep flying when there is nothing there. They tend to eat up a
lot of their winter stores.
