James. I’m a bit surprised that you “took quite a bit of flack from all sides” for advocating acetic acid (AA) fumigation of comb.
What happened in the intervening period between 1957 when Bailey published an AA fumigation method in ABJ and ca. 2008-9? Was Bailey simply ignored? [Bailey, L. 1957. “Comb fumigation for nosema disease.” American Bee Journal. 97: 24-26.]
More recently, I see Randy Oliver writing about this fumigation method in “The ‘Nosema Twins’ – Part 5 Alternative Treatments.” http://scientificbeekeeping.com/the-nosema-twins-part-5-alternative-treatments/
“Another proven method to fumigate combs is with concentrated acetic….This is a time-honored practice that is mentioned in all the bee books, yet surprisingly, is illegal! No one has registered acetic acid as a pesticide for nosema. So if you do use it, make sure that you are applying it as a “comb freshener”– not as a nosema treatment!”
AA fumigation of comb “illegal” as a “treatment”? Where?
Re. effectiveness of AA fumigation with respect to N. ceranae (now the dominant species), this paper by Pernal, et al. is of interest. AA fumigation does not totally terminate N. ceranae spores.
“In general, the acetic acid fumigation, heat and irradiation treatments all showed some suppression of the spring peak of N. ceranae spore development in bees, though suppression was more immediate and complete for irradiated comb. Only the irradiated treatment maintained spores at levels similar to non-inoculated colonies during the entire study.” https://articles.extension.org/pages/30369/abrc2010-disinfection-of-nosema-ceranae-infected-comb-by-irradiation-acetic-acid-and-heat
