is a ratio I’ve often heard.

I did a quick review of the literature.  0.5% NaCl appears to be
attractive, but not too high.
A tsp of salt weighs 5.69 g; a gallon of water 3785 g.
So a 0.5% solution would be 3.3 tsp/gal.

I am not making a recommendation--just doing the math.  A tsp/gal would
likely be safe.
