I have my hives close to the ground, so in winter there is often snow covering the lower entrance. In late winter they are often enough dead bees to block the lower entrance. These seem like valid reasons to have an upper entrance. The idea that a 3/4" to 1 inch hole is going to chill the bees down significantly is unsupported.
