We will need to define "insulation" to continue this discussion. I see it
mentioned that if a colony is "insulated" an upper entrance could
potentially harm the bees?

What is definition as insulation, and what is defined as an upper entrance?

I saw reference to a 1 inch diameter hole as an upper entrance. That seems
quite excessive. The diameter of the upper entrance will dictate the
magnitude of the convectional loss.
