Justin Kay made a good point that I hadn’t considered regarding the amount of mites on a sticky board and good grooming. As for new beekeepers running a cup up the frame to gather bee’s for a mite roll seems daunting and stressful; I was taught by Randy (at a NYBEEWELLNESS workshop) to just shake the frame into a dishpan, the flyers fly away and the nurse bee’s stay; you scoop them right out and into your shaker. You can also observe if you inadvertently shook the queen in. I mention this because there are many new beekeepers that follow this thread.
