This anecdotal account would be easy and cheap to verify with a quick survey
of the web pages, facebook accounts, and Instagram accounts for the various
beekeeping groups. If we find many beekeepers who have passed away, then the
claim is too optimistic. But the scourge has yet to reach the provinces yet
with any real fury, and I hope it does not get as bad as it has been in the
metro areas.
But beekeeping invariably includes a certain amount of consistent physical
exercise, even for the most automated of our operations. The physical labor
of beekeeping may itself be the crucial factor. This seems far more
intuitive than some convoluted explanation about beekeepers having "better"
immune systems simply due to being stung regularly. The Covid affliction is
a respiratory problem, so those who have good cardio-vascular conditioning
recover, and those who don't, don't. (Suddenly, having a live-in personal
trainer seems the ultimate luxury, rather than such a drag when I am
reminded that it is time to get in the gym and do my cardio, and "no" is not
an acceptable answer under some obscure clause in the marriage vows.)
But don't fret - even the less-active beekeepers that contribute to Bee-L
discussions are certain to be in great shape from all the exercise we get
when jumping to conclusions, pushing viewpoints, and rushing to judgement.
