An EFB-like affliction hit our few colonies at the end of April (38th
parallel, 7500 feet). We watched it carefully for a month, hoping that
it would dissipate and while we arranged a more structured scientific
effort at one of the USDA/ARS labs than just diagnosis. It got
progressively worse in a few colonies and really set them back compared
to neighbor colonies that showed absolutely no signs. Varroa in all
colonies (infected or not) was low. In collecting and recording a
series of individual larvae (or their remains) from three colonies with
the worst symptoms they were off-color, white gray, yellow, or brown,
ranged all ages (including some partly uncapped), condition ranged from
normal curved to straight in cells to melted. A month after first
symptoms, and a week after an application of Terramycin in powdered
sugar all symptoms disappeared. No untreated controls.
