If one is interested in some perspective on past US alternatives to neonicotinoids, it's worthwhile to get a copy of book Pollinator Protection by Johanson and Mayer. In it, you will find the oftentimes disturbing history of our quest to control pests with the likes of chlorinated hydrocarbons (DDT), organophosphates, carbamates, and so on. Not a time many of us would welcome back given the risks to human health and the planet. But pest control is not going away anytime soon and it may be that the next non-toxic iteration of pest control will come with editing their genes like the recent work with mosquitos outlined in this article published in Nature- https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-017-02744-7

Made me shiver thinking that we used to look forward to riding our bikes in the DDT smoke behind the mosquito truck.
