Subject: ID of metal discs

Three metal dish-shaped discs, with a large hole in their base, have been found on Pacific islands and variously linked to Amelia Earhart's Lockheed 10 aircraft that went missing in July 1937, fishing equipment, and discs to keep rats from climbing up ships' mooring ropes.

I admit that only the search for Earhart's aircraft qualifies as historical archaeology, but I am curious whether somebody on HISTARCH might be able to throw some light on their function. They are each some 20 cm in diameter.

Other than what is on the TIGHAR link above, I know nothing about the properties of these discs.
