​I wonder if bees are able to perceive the earth's position relative to the
sun in a manner that we mere humans simply are not. Perhaps we are unable
to solve this puzzle because we so anthropomorphic.

I also like Pete's point regarding wrapping and ventilation that due to
seasonal variation there is no one size fits all answer, even in the same
bee yard.
