Two years ago I caught a very small (<1 lb), late Sept. feral swarm at a
job site back in the hills about 6 miles from a known apiary. I didn't
sample for mites but I did treat with OA dribble. I got them through the
Winter and combined them with another colony in the Spring. I assumed that
they had swarmed due to in inhospitable (mites, old nasty comb, other, take
your pick or invent your own reason) residence.
