Dear colleague and friend,
We are pleased to enclose a complimentary copy of EXPRESSION 28. The
issue is coming out on time despite the coronavirus epidemic. Some of
the editorial team remained in isolation while on fieldwork in faraway
countries. Editorial work progressed by the internet. In the state of
captivity due to the epidemic, it gave us a sense of liberation, to be
able to work as a team, from different continents, as if we were
sitting around one table, editing, deciding on queries, planning
contents, developing graphic concepts. Indeed, the world is small and
the internet prevailed over the rules of quarantine.
The main topic of this issue is Cultural Diffusion. Articles accompany
the reader from the Camonica Valley and the Alpine area as a region of
cultural diffusion, to the flow of traditions among the Plain Indians
of North America, to the islands of Malta, where migrations brought
cultures from other shores of the Mediterranean, to hunters and
pastoral tribes in Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan in Asia, to the works of
nomadic tribes of the Sahara Desert in Africa. Other papers on
cultural diffusion will appear in forthcoming issues.
New topics are being considered for forthcoming issues, as you
discover in the DISCUSSION FORUM of this issue. Most prehistoric and
tribal art is the expression of beliefs. The theme of “Ancient myths
narrated by rock art” is an invitation to reveal an immense wealth of
traditions. The theme, frequently considered in previous issues of
EXPRESSION, never stops being alive. “Defining the identity of Homo
sapiens” is another theme of actuality. The past becomes actuality
when values and concepts risk becoming vague.
Another theme is that of colonization and decolonization. It is an
eternal theme for both colonizers and colonized. It concerns the
entire globe, including Europe, the US, China, India and Russia.
Examples, details, past histories and discussions may help to clarify
the phenomenon.
You will find information on “The Intellectual and Spiritual
Expressions of Non-literate Peoples”, the session planned by the
CISENP International Commission at the World Prehistoric Congress of
UISPP (International Union of Prehistoric Sciences) in Morocco, which
is delayed to September 2021. Potential participants are invited to
register, indicating, if pertinent, the title of proposed
contributions. Details are available in the enclosed issue.
