Hello everyone-

My name is Leo Demski and I took over the SHA Technologies Committee chair position from Ed Gonzalez-Tennant in January. One of my duties is to help organize the technologies room. With the conference in Oakland just a few months away, we still have space in the Tech room for anyone who would like to participate.

SHA Oakland 2024 Technologies Room
Thursday 1/4/24 9am-5pm & Friday 1/5/24 9am-5pm

We are looking for individuals or groups interested in presenting an aspect of technology and/or its application useful for historical archaeology, whether terrestrial or underwater. Participants could include students, researchers (academic or otherwise), non-profits, CRM, historic preservation, local, state, or federal agencies, museum groups, archives, collections, other entities, etc.

Topics might include technology useful for data collection, analytical research, visualization, interpretation, conservation, preservation, community engagement, etc. This might come in any form including demos of interesting or new tech tools, computer applications, hardware, apps, etc., or be a table with people chatting about a project they used tech on that allowed them to discover or understand things better or in a different way.

All kinds of things are possible- including technology discussions related to data collection, field or lab technologies, analysis using specialized tools, software analysis, remote-sensing, sonar, drones, alternative spectra, photogrammetry, 3D scanning/ printing applications, GIS, or even AI topics. Anything is a possible topic.

Current participants will be covering aspects of heritage imaging techniques, computational photography (including photogrammetry), and UAV techniques and applications. This includes CHI, the instructors of the tech committee sponsored workshop (see below for more info).

Commitment is a minimum 2 hour time slot. Longer time periods possible with negotiation.
During this time, tech room participants would present/demonstrate/table, or be on hand to answer questions about their tech topic. Demonstrations encouraged...
Mode of presentation is open to discussion.

Interested in participating or have questions?
Let me know at [log in to unmask] Please feel free to forward this to anyone who might be interested. Hope to see you in the Technologies Room in Oakland in January!

Best wishes,
Leo Demski

P.S. The Tech committee is also sponsoring a Workshop (Wednesday 1/3/24 from 1-3:30pm):

WKS-7 Computational Photography Techniques for Historical Sites and Artifacts. Through lectures, demonstrations, and discussion, this workshop provides a condensed overview of computational photography and its application to cultural heritage. Computational Photography extracts and synthesizes information from image sequences to create a new image containing information not found in any single image in the sequence. This workshop offers an intensive introduction to the technologies, software, photographic equipment, and methods for reflectance transformation imaging (RTI), and photogrammetry.
