I like it as a hollow point, but it lacks a jacket, and the weight is on the light side in terms of grains (even considering loss from impact). Non-jacketed hollow points were in use from the last quarter of the 1800s into the early 1900s, before jackets were used to control expansion. The light weight of the object (even given the missing fragments) would make me think it's probably closer to a bullet fired from a .30ish caliber rifle or pistol - seems a good match for a .32-20. The object looks similar to an illustration of a fired "express" rifle bullet from an 1870 British manual of rural sports, including the indentation on the base of the bullet.

Subject: Unknown metal object - help!

Good Morning all!

I am reporting on a prehistoric site in Marshall County, Kansas, and amongst the prehistoric artifacts are a few historic items, including this puzzler pictured in Kansas Memory: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.kansasmemory.org_item_455947&d=DwIGaQ&c=jvUANN7rYqzaQJvTqI-69lgi41yDEZ3CXTgIEaHlx7c&r=-8pj4cEgioZn2bzjziNMBdJ1XqJq6a4P68eVLG-usDQ&m=pqjakWxq0WalbyjIEvwwb3xVd_zpYdprljWwxP_2_g8&s=tLN6dgbqZv4Cklb7sQtGbDZoeblVDAUHK0-3lQQkQu8&e= .

The best we at the Kansas Historical Society have been able to come up with is that it might be an attachment...very vague. It is heavy for its size, possibly made of lead, and is pinched or crimped at the top, and then later hit by farm equipment. Does this suggest any possibilities to you learned folk?
