For those historical archaeology and material culture students who got their degrees under the former Department of American Civilization at Penn I am sad to report that Murray G. Murphey passed away in Philadelphia on December 6, 2018. He was 90 years old. Murray was the Chair of American Civilization for many years at Penn and (along with Tony Garvan ) was a major supporter of historical archaeology at Penn under John Cotter, Dave Orr, and Bob Schuyler. His graduate introductory seminar was a classic, especially his annual closing "Gloom and Doom" lecture.

His obituary is now up on line and you can leave messages at the Funeral Home about your memories of Murray.
