I ran into one family who would likely have been a fine customer for a
"service" of this sort.
I was called by a gardener, and asked if I would be interested in a rooftop
"in the West Village".
I didn't, but I figured I could establish a relationship, and then pass off
that roof to someone who was in need of one.
It was weird though - no roof access unless the gardener was there, so I had
to make an appointment to see my bees several days in advance.
The house was empty more often than not, so I could understand how trust
would have to be established before they simply handed me a key.
They spent summers in the Hamptons, so they were not around at all to see
the hives when they were most interesting.
I moved the hive after first harvest, as "making appointments" to go to an
empty house to tend two hives for people who had not even asked to see the
bees once seemed a futile exercise.
When I told the gardener I was moving the hives, she tried to claim that the
hives were not mine.
I asked her how that might be true, given that I had not been paid a dime,
nor had anyone asked me to do anything other than to put my hives on the
roof.
She started to hem and haw, so I pulled out my phone.
She said "Don't call - I'll pay you."
Then I realized - the gardener had taken money from her customer without
telling me.
I thought I had been offered yet another free roof by an environmentally
aware person, when the actual deal was that the bees and hives had been
"sold".
I put the phone back in my pocket, prepped the hives, and lugged them down
the fire escape.
I never went back, and no one called me.
I have no idea what the gardener told her customer.
People are strange.
