Basil Furgala was one of the first to use it. However, everyone seems to have forgotten his warning. I don't have the exact words, but it was something like: No use applying thymol in the fall, you might as well pour it on the ground and stamp on it, for all the good that it will do.
It's a fumigant, and not a cold/cool weather product. Also, the dose is considerably more than a couple of cough drops or a few teaspoons of thymol - it's slow to vaporize, which is a plus, but it's so slow, you need sufficient material to offset the slow sublimation in order to get enough of it into the hive air in order to be effective.
