So I have reverted to the tried and true method of writing on top of the hives. I have been using a large magic marker of late, though I know that many professional beekeepers use lumber crayons. 

my comments..
I use the same system on both my own hives and those at the lab.  Basically the system is nothing more than an alert that there is something that needs attention on that hive or has some problem in that hive.  With metal tops denatured alcohol remove the marks but yes they do fade over time.
