"our effort to maintain desirable species, which is often difficult"
The effort in Germany was not to maintain a desirable species but rather to maintain a desirable cultivar.
Right, nailed again on word usage. However, the point is valid. We spend a lot of effort to make the natural world over to benefit ourselves, & often either fail or set up a very high maintenance regime. Meanwhile, nature in the form of invasive species, climate change, etc. is working at other purposes. I certainly do not believe that evolution is this or that, but a myriad of biological forces which we can see as one or as many, depending on the lens through which we view it.
