To anthropomorphize, a recent study on human stomach acid inhibitors showed
they affect liver functions since they stop acid and it is the acidic
environment that kills off invading bacteria. So you could stretch that to
bees, if the gut flora is compromised, since that could lead to bad things
happening.

Which leads to the researcher's favorite phrase- "more study is required"
which is immediately followed by "send funds".
