as a new beekeeper in piedmont nc, i have attended local classes. the most important takeaway for me has been this: if you treat beekeeping like animal husbandry & bees like livestock that need care, food, medicine, a place to live, with diseases & pests that need to be addressed, you’ll be more successful with your bees. i thought that advice apt having worked a fat lamb operation in nm.

when i saw the first shb in one of my hives, i panicked. then remembered the advice, calmed down, & smashed it.

since then, i’ve witnessed another hobbyist’s weaker hive w/ very very many shb & a professional’s nucs w/ fewer. the hobbyist was trying to be chemical free so i smashed shb & sprayed his beeyard w/ nematodes (mine, too) to stop his shb bomb. the pro & i gleefully smashed & moved on.
