For Immediate Release
Hello!
The newest issue of the Old Pueblo Archaeology bulletin - number 85 - has
just been published, bringing Old Pueblo Archaeology Center closer to being
back on schedule with our quarterly electronic publication!
This issue's lead article, Droughts, Floods, and Social Infrastructure in
the Pre-Hispanic US Southwest, was written by Dr. Nicolas Gauthier,
Assistant Curator for Artificial Intelligence in the Florida Museum of
Natural History, and a former postdoctoral researcher at the University of
Arizona's Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research and the Scripps Institution of
Oceanography. In this article, Dr. Gauthier he identifies six basic patterns
of droughts and floods that have occurred over the past 100 years based on
tree-ring environmental records, compares the patterns with archaeological
records of the pre-Hispanic (ca. 1200-1450 CE) Hohokam, Mogollon, and
Ancestral Pueblo cultures of the US Southwest to show that the patterns were
valid for the past 1,000 years, and interprets the effects of climate change
and social networks on ancient migrations of people from certain parts of
the Southwest to other areas. He concludes that social infrastructure was of
prime importance in these ancient societies' responses to climate disasters:
Maintaining a diverse social network was crucial for past populations to
avoid the risk of cli-mate disaster, and it apparently was easier for people
of some set-tlements than others. Dr. Gauthier also points out that since
the six basic drought and flood patterns influence our climate today, our
own social relationships are just as important as physical infrastructure
such as utilities, roads, and brid-ges when adapting to challenging
climates.
The second article in this bulletin issue is Introductory Paths to Get into
Field Sciences Like Archaeology by archaeologist Brian W. Kenny. His article
may be of great help to persons who want to know what it takes to become an
archaeolo-gist.
