Hello!

The newest issue of the Old Pueblo Archaeology bulletin, number 83, has just
been published electronically - and belatedly, but we're making progress on
catching up with our publication schedule!

In this issue's lead article Let's Look at Fish: Pisciforms in the Jornada
Mogollon Region of Southern New Mexico and West Texas, rock art researcher
Margaret "Marglyph" Berrier illustrates and discusses 84 separate petroglyph
and pictograph panels she has catalogued in this Chihuahuan Desert region
that apparently depict fish. She concludes that the Three Rivers petroglyphs
site north of Tularosa, New Mexico, has the greatest diversity of fish
petroglyphs in the Jornada Mogollon region, and that whoever created the
fish images there and elsewhere in the Jornada may not have meant them to be
merely illustrative. While most Jornada rock art images of fish are not as
elaborate as those on some Mimbres Black-on-white pottery bowls, many of
them occur in pairs, she writes, perhaps representing the "Hero Twins" and a
shared cosmologic connection among Jornada Mogollon, Mimbres, and other
southwestern Indigenous cultures.

This bulletin issue's second article ponders the question Why Do
Southwestern Archaeologists Rarely Use the Term "Precolumbian"?, which
Arizona State Museum docent and Old Pueblo Archaeology Center member Lynn
Ratener posed to me recently.

nontechnical format, includes ample illustrations, and is published
electronically in pdf format for on-line access. Each issue of Old Pueblo
Archaeology includes one or more feature articles about southwestern
archaeology, history, or cultures and provides news about Old Pueblo
Archaeology Center's activities and program offerings. All previous issues
