Thank you all for sharing your expertise.  My strange little object seems to be a not so strange hollow point bullet that expanded/mushroomed.  You folk are the best!

I would say that is an expended bullet. As David said, could be a hollow point because of way it mushroomed. Did not hit anything hard.

It sure looks like an expended bullet. Hard to tell, but it would be in the .40+  caliber range, which was, and still is, common. It is "mushroomed,"
and the way it is mushroomed, it looks like it was a hollow point. Likely went into something relatively soft.
