The crib dam is everywhere in the nineteenth century, fundamental
technology.  Lyle is correct re: the Leffel book as a basic reference.  I
excavated a crib dam and portions of a gristmill site in the 70s for the
Mackinac Island State Park Commission and my diss.  They published as "The
Mill Creek Site and Pattern Recognition in Historical Archaeology" in 1985,
available on Amazon and elsewhere.  Michigan State University Library has
the published version and an electronic version of the diss online, too.
